Kathy Smith Dias

Kathy is a senior patent attorney who has been with the firm’s Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical group since 1996, focusing her practice on inventions in the life sciences, biochemistry and biotechnology. She is also a member of the firm’s Medical Products and Technology practice group. Kathy’s clients include universities, start-ups and corporate clients. She has extensive experience in patent preparation; foreign and domestic patent prosecution; patentability, freedom to operate, non-infringement and invalidity analyses/opinions; and general patent counseling.

Kathy holds a Juris Doctor from Albany Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the State University of New York at Albany. Prior to attending law school, Kathy spent 10+ years in biomedical research at the State University of New York at Albany, the New York State Department of Health and Albany Medical College. During her time at the bench, Kathy acquired extensive experience in several disciplines, including immunology, virology and cell biology. The focus of her research in immunology was the impacts of oxidative stress and heavy metal exposure on immune function.

Kathy is admitted to the New York State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
